Helping people is my passion. Each person, regardless of their health condition, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. At LifeWays, I get to help people move beyond what they currently feel to find their smiles again.
I have worked in the mental health field for over 20 years and feel it is one of the best ways to make an impact in our community. I often run into people that LifeWays has provided services to who tell me the positive impact their services have had in their lives. That makes me feel good.
I decided I wanted to work in the health field when I was in high school. Then in medical school, I was fascinated by the human brain. The fact you can make such a big difference without really touching a knife or even giving a pill – just with the power of the human mind. In mental health, when it’s done right, we harness the power of the human mind. Humans have so much potential. If we do our jobs right, all we need to do is shine the light and then people do the work themselves. Our patients are the bravest, most resilient people in the whole world. They humble me every day.
My job is to find solutions to crisis events and to help people going through a crisis stay safe and regain stability in their lives. I am proudest of the work that I do when I see someone that we’re working with 'get it' – when they see there are more positive and constructive ways of managing their life.
I look forward to coming to work because I love being able to help people in any way that I can. That may be linking them to services that can help them in their recovery or just lending a listening ear to someone who needs to talk. I love to see the people that we serve thrive and increase their quality of life.
Mental illness is no different from any other physical illness. There are signs and symptoms, it can go into remission, and some people can even fully recover. You can still lead a happy, functional life with mental illness. I look forward to coming to work each day knowing that I am going to be able to help someone overcome the challenges and obstacles that might be holding them back from achieving the meaningful things in their life.
